Since there is little to comment upon in this week's news, may we take this opportunity to give an advance notice about a forthcoming conference organised by Progress Educational Trust.
It has been 10 years since the UK's Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) came into existence. The HFEA and the act of parliament which it polices is often upheld as a prime example of public policy making in biomedicine. But has it worked? Has it been beneficial or detrimental? Has it been too restrictive or too liberal?
'Controversy, control and creativity: public policy making in assisted reproduction and genetics' will examine the impact of this regulation on research and clinical practice in assisted reproduction. Further, it will consider what lessons we can learn from the experience and how we might apply them to other areas of biomedicine such as clinical genetics and stem cell research
The conference will be held at the Institute of Child Health in London on Friday 7 December 2001. If you would like to be sent the full programme and registration details when they become available, please send an email to events@progress.org.uk. We look forward to seeing you there.
