Last week, BioNews published a story about the prosecution and conviction of John Gonzales for fraud, in which we stated that 'Gonzalez's service illustrated a loophole in current UK regulation, which governs frozen gamete storage and use, but not 'fresh' sperm'.
It has been pointed out to us that this is no longer the case, since the supply of sperm for home insemination came within the scope of the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Act 1990 on 5 July 2007, when the Act was amended by the Human Fertilisation and Embryology (Quality and Safety) Regulations 2007 to implement the EU Tissues and Cells Directive in respect of gametes and embryos (described in the Directive as 'Reproductive Cells'). We apologise for any misunderstanding this error might have caused.
