Gene expression

Gene expression is the process of converting the information contained in a gene into the gene product (usually proteins). The DNA of the gene is first transcribed into RNA, which is then translated into a protein, such as an enzyme other functional product. Genes can be turned 'on' or 'off' in different cells, for example by transcription factors.
