'Breast Cancer: Chances, Choices and Genetics', a project organised by the Progress Educational Trust and supported by the Wellcome Trust

Breast Cancer Poll

BioNews and the charity that publishes it, the Progress Educational Trust (PET), would like to know what women and men think about breast cancer and genetic testing.

This poll contains seven questions and takes only a minute or two to complete. By completing the poll, you will be helping to inform public debate about breast cancer. All responses will be anonymous, and the results will be published and discussed on BioNews later this year.

Angelina Jolie

The poll forms part of PET's 'Breast Cancer: Chances, Choices and Genetics' project, which is supported by the Wellcome Trust. The project was inspired by the global discussion surrounding the double mastectomy undergone by actress Angelina Jolie, who carries a BRCA1 mutation.

At four public events held as part of this project in 2014, audiences were asked what questions about breast cancer they wanted PET to put to the public. The following questions were chosen from their suggestions.

  1. If you had a strong family history of breast cancer, would you want to be tested for possible genetic mutations associated with breast cancer?

  2. Would concerns about the cost or availability of insurance discourage you from being tested for genetic mutations associated with breast cancer?

  3. If you had a strong family history of breast cancer, would you want to have your child tested for possible genetic mutations at a young age?

  4. If it were possible, would you like to know your lifetime risk of getting breast cancer?

  5. Where do you seek out, or most commonly come across, information about breast cancer (please tick all that apply)? And how confident are you that this information is accurate?
