Introduction to the News Media

Science Media Centre
Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, 27 Sussex Place, Regent's Park, London NW1 4RG
07 March 2018 - 12.30pm-6pm

Are you a scientist or doctor with little or no media experience? Are you working in the field of fertility research? Are you interested in how the media works, and how to help journalists report your subject better?

Come to this free-to-attend Science Media Centre event. You will hear from - and have an opportunity to interrogate - national news science journalists about what makes a story, what drives the news agenda, and what they need from you. Journalists speaking include:

  • Hannah Devlin (Science Correspondent, The Guardian)
  • James Gallagher (Health and Science Reporter, BBC News)
  • Vicky Allen (Science Correspondent, Daily Mail)
  • Jacqui Thornton (freelance health journalist)

You will also hear from scientists who have worked with the media and lived to tell the tale, including:

  • Allan Pacey (Professor on Andrology, University of Sheffield)
  • Alison Murdoch (Professor of Reproductive Medicine at Newcastle University and Head of Newcastle Fertility Centre)
  • Richard Sharpe (Emeritus Professor, University of Edinburgh)
And from press officers working at the coalface of science communication

The event will be followed by a drinks reception. Attendance is free, but places are limited.

To reserve your place please email 'introduction [at] sciencemediacentre [dot] org' with your full name, job title, institution, institutional email address and phone number.
