Introduction to News Media
Science Media Centre
Old College, University of Edinburgh, South Bridge, Edinburgh EH8 9YL, UK
12 March 2010 - 1pm-5pm A course introducing scientists and engineers with little or no media experience to the workings of the news media.
Science has never been as prominent in the news as it is today, and it is paramount that scientific issues be communicated correctly. There are some excellent science journalists in the UK and elsewhere, but science will never be covered as accurately as one might wish without the direct involvement of the experts themselves.
Those attending the course should gain an improved understanding of:
the deadlines that journalists work to;
the role of the editor;
how journalists find stories;
the role of the press officer;
the importance of engaging with the media.
To register, contact the Science Media Centre at or on +44 (0)20 7670 2921.
