Clarification: HFEA rebuked by medical risk expert12 May 2009 By Appeared in BioNews 507 Last week BioNews reported on a letter published in The Sunday Times newspaper in which Brian Toft, professor of patient safety at Coventry University, declared the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) - the UK Government's fertility watchdog - 'unfit for purpose'. BioNews would like to clarify that Professor Toft is not leading the latest investigation into the IVF mix-up which took place at Guy's and St Thomas' hospital in February. He did, however, lead an investigation into an incident which took place in Leeds in 2002, in which the wrong sperm was used to create embryos for IVF couples resulting in mixed-race twins being born to white parents.
